Who was Vera Gedroits ?, She is one of the first Russian female surgeons, one of the first women in the world professor to have been awarded a award of surgery and appointed holder of a chair of surgery.
She is the author of original scientific works in the field of military, general and pediatric surgery.
A graduate of the University of Lausanne, she was a student of the surgeon César Roux. She took part in the Russo-Japanese war, first as a surgeon on a medical train for the Russian Red Cross Society, then as manager of a field hospital, and developed new laparotomy protocols there.
Convinced that the revolution was inevitable and necessary, Vera Gedroitz was nevertheless very close to the imperial family. She teaches nursing to Empress Alexandra Feodorovna and Princesses Olga and Tatiana, who then work as nurses under her direction. She contributed to the establishment of the Kiev School of Surgery.
She is also known as a woman of letters, for her prose and as a poet of the Silver Age.
She passed away in March 1932 at Kyiv in Ukraine.
